The Federal University of Health SciencesTeaching Hospital, Ila orangun (FUHSTHI) On Wednesday 22nd July, 2026, played host to a delegation from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria as part of the accreditation process for the hospital's Medical Laboratory Science department.
The accreditation team was formally received in the hospital's board room where officials of the institution gathered to facilitate the exercise. Welcoming the delegation the Director of Medical Laboratory Services Mrs. Folake Bello extended a warm welcome to the visiting team and stated the purpose of their visit.
Addressing the delegation the Chief Medical Director of the hospital Professor Kola Musliudeen Owonikoko expressed his delight at receiving the team. He highlighted the hospital's growing reputation as a centre of excellence noting that this visit marked yet another milestone in its journey toward clinical distinction.
Professor Owonikoko recalled that the hospital had previously hosted accreditation panels from the Medical Theatre Council of Nigeria for the accreditation of medical clinical students as well as the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria which assessed both the university and the hospital. He noted with satisfaction that all previous assessments had yielded positive outcomes. Underscoring the institution's commitment to maintaining the highest standards in healthcare training and service delivery.
Reaffirming his vision for the hospital, the chief medical director declared that his mission is to transform the institution into a world-class teaching hospital capable of competing with the finest facilities across the globe. He emphasized that patient welfare remains a top priority revealing that a dedicated rapid-response unit (SERVICOM) has been established to ensure prompt attention to patients and eliminate unnecessary delays in service delivery. On infrastructure, He disclosed a significant capital commitment in the hospital's budget: an entire building has been earmarked exclusively for a modern laboratory complex, for the project he said.
The chief medical director also announced that a formal collaboration has been established between the hospital and the university's Medical Laboratory Science programme, a partnership designed to strengthen training, research, and service delivery.
Speaking on behalf of the accreditation team, the team leader Professor I. O. Omotosho introduced other members of the delegation including Dr. Akinwale Akinlabi, director of education (MLSCN), Abuja. Dr. Samson Olusegun Aturaka (McPherson University), and Mr. Mukhtar Bello. Professor Omotosho commended the hospital management for what he has seen so far around the hospital within the relatively short period since the hospital's establishment. He noted that the institution is clearly focused is on building a healthcare facility that not only attracts admiration but also meets the standard anywhere.
He reaffirmed that every teaching hospital is founded on three core mandates; teaching, research, and service delivery.
He praised the hospital's management for making commendable progress in fulfilling this objectives. He particularly noted the cohesive and unified approach of the hospital's leadership and applauded the management for recruiting eighteen scientists to strengthen service delivery.
Furthermore the team leader lauded the chief medical director and his management team for fostering collaboration and demonstrating visionary leadership.
Concluding his address, Professor Omotosho offered prayers for the continued success of the hospital and its leadership expressing hope that the institution would continue to achieve greater milestones in it's mission to advance healthcare, education, and research.
Following the formal addresses, members of the Public Relations Unit and the Department Of Medical Laboratory science accompanied the accreditation team on an inspection tour of the department.
After the inspection, the team reconvened in the board room to present its observations. One of the issues highlighted was the limited space available within the department. Responding to the observation the chief medical director explained that the available space is being effectively managed to ensure uninterrupted service delivery while plans for expansion are underway.
He assured the accreditation team that the department would witness significant improvements before any subsequent accreditation visit adding that the hospital is still in it's developmental stage and would continue to expand in the near future.
In their separate remarks the team lead, Prof. Isiak Omotosho, a Professor of Chemical Pathology/ Bio-chemical Toxicology, University of Ibadan, described what they saw on ground is encouraging for a teaching hospital less than a year of operation. He added that there were indications of good proposals and foresight for the future of quality healthcare services.
According to Prof. Musa Abidemi Muibi, HOD, Medical Laboratory Science at FUHSI, " The visit is necessary to assess our facilities, operations and personnel and to see whether we merit accreditation or not. Since the hospital is where our students are to be trained it becomes necessary to assess facilities, personnel, and equipment for the students to favourably compete with their peers anywhere in the world."
Prof. Muibi commended the management of the hospital for the facilities and staff paraded for the accreditation exercise which he said he was optimistic that the result would be positive.
