FUHSTHI Begins Implementation of Emergency Medical Services, Ambulance System

The Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ila-Orangun (FUHSTHI), has flagged off the full implementation of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) at the hospital.

The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Kazeem Oderinu, disclosed this during the flag-off of the programme's operational unit at the hospital, where he assured the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Kola Musliudeen Owonikoko, and other management staff that every effort would be deployed towards the success and sustenance of the programme.

Dr. Oderinu stated that NEMSAS is a Federal Government initiative designed to provide 48 hours of free treatment to patients presenting with emergency cases.Stressing that the scheme covers pregnancy-related emergencies, emergencies involving children under five years of age (including neonates), road accidents, and gunshot injuries, as well as cases of snakebite, drowning, fire-related injuries, building collapse, communal clashes and other weapon-related emergencies.

He pointed out that only cases falling within the defined scope of NEMSAS would be treated under the programme.

Delivering his address,the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Kola Owonikoko, appreciated the Chairman of the Committee and reaffirmed his confidence in its ability to deliver on the task before it, adding that the programme would also assist in arranging ambulance services during emergency situations.

Prof. Owonikoko pledged his continued support for the committee, while advising members to keep proper documentation of records, which he said would facilitate reimbursement from the Federal Government and enhance the sustainability of the programme.

He,however called for the maximum cooperation of all staff towards the success of the programme.

The highlight of the event was the cutting of the tape, which signalled the official flag-off of NEMSAS at FUHSTHI.
