Biography

Dr. Ayeni Abidemi Ibironke is a distinguished Nigerian Consultant Radiologist who currently serves as the Head of the Radiology Unit at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital (FUHSTHI) in Ila‑Orangun, Osun State. She was born on 9th February 1983 in Oyo State, Nigeria, and hails from Ilesa‑East Local Government Area in Osun State. Her early education began at Ebeneseri Nursery and Primary School in Ibadan and continued at St James Primary School, Arulogun, Ibadan, where she obtained her Primary School Leaving Certificate in 1997. She then attended Methodist Grammar School, Bodija, Ibadan, and earned her West African Senior School Certificate in 1999. Driven by a passion for medicine, she proceeded to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2010. She later pursued specialist training and was awarded the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in Radiology in 2025, a milestone that reflects her dedication to excellence in diagnostic and interventional imaging. Dr. Ayeni is married to Ayeni Isaac Olufemi and resides in Osun State; outside her professional duties, she enjoys reading and listening to music.

Professional Experience

Dr. Ayeni's medical career spans over a decade, beginning with her housemanship at the University College Hospital in Ibadan from July 2011 to June 2012. She then served as a Medical Officer during her National Youth Service Corps at the State Specialist Hospital in Asubiaro, Osogbo, from July 2012 to June 2013. Subsequently, she worked as a Medical Officer at the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo from July 2014 until March 2018. Her radiology training commenced in earnest when she joined the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, also in Osogbo, as a Junior Registrar in the Department of Radiology from April 2018 to October 2021, and was later promoted to Senior Registrar from October 2021 to April 2025. During this period, she also undertook supranumerary resident posts at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile‑Ife, first as a Junior Registrar from October 2020 to September 2021 and then as a Senior Registrar from April 2024 to March 2025. In July 2025, she was appointed Consultant Radiologist at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, a position she held until her current appointment as Consultant Radiologist and Head of the Radiology Unit at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ila‑Orangun, where she now leads the department and oversees all radiological services.

Research And Leadership

Dr. Ayeni has demonstrated strong leadership capabilities throughout her career, most notably in her current role as Head of the Radiology Unit at FUHSTHI, where she is responsible for guiding clinical practice, ensuring quality assurance, and mentoring junior colleagues in the specialty. She is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association, the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, the Breast Imaging Society of Nigeria, and the Association of Radiologists in Nigeria, through which she contributes to policy discussions and the advancement of radiology in the country. Her commitment to continuing professional development is evident from her regular attendance at national and international workshops and conferences. She has participated in virtual revision courses on interventional radiology, cardiovascular radiology, and mammography best practices, organised by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, the West African College of Surgeons, and the Breast Imaging Society of Nigeria. She also attended the African Research Group for Oncology conference in Ile‑Ife in September 2023, which focused on innovative approaches to cancer care in Nigeria, and the Association of Radiologists in Nigeria’s annual general meeting in November 2025, where the theme addressed radiology and global health with particular emphasis on reducing machine downtime. Beyond academic gatherings, Dr. Ayeni has engaged in humanitarian service, volunteering her medical skills during a free outreach programme at Christ Apostolic Church, Latona, Osogbo, in September 2023, thereby extending essential health services to underserved communities.

Dr. Ayeni’s most significant professional recognition is the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in Radiology, which she obtained in 2025 after a rigorous training and examination process that affirmed her expertise in the field.
